Distinguish description and direction
A passage may describe an action, express a feeling, make a promise, or give an instruction. These require different responses. An account of someone’s behavior does not automatically commend it, and a promise to a particular audience should not be detached from that setting.
Remember and choose
Moses addresses Israel before entry into the land, recalling deliverance and teaching covenant faithfulness. Love for God is expressed through worship, justice, and ordinary conduct. The audience and covenant setting matter when reading its promises and commands.
With Deuteronomy 20–22 in view: What are the people asked to remember, and how should that memory shape their conduct?
