Listen to the voices
Identify who is speaking and who is being addressed. A narrator, a character, a poet, and a letter writer do not all function in the same way. Before accepting a statement as the passage’s teaching, consider how the surrounding text presents its speaker.
A land and a calling
Joshua recounts entry into the land, conflict, distribution of territory, and covenant renewal. These ancient accounts of conquest require careful attention to their setting. They do not authorize modern violence or the seizure of another people's land.
With Joshua 22–24 in view: How does this account portray responsibility for receiving and living in the land?
Reflect on today’s passage
Whose words need to be weighed against the surrounding passage?
One response

Pray
Bring one observation, one question, and one need from today’s reading to God. Ask for understanding and wisdom to respond faithfully.
