Distinguish description and direction
A passage may describe an action, express a feeling, make a promise, or give an instruction. These require different responses. An account of someone’s behavior does not automatically commend it, and a promise to a particular audience should not be detached from that setting.
Power and its consequences
David's reign includes covenant promise, achievement, grave wrongdoing, and family devastation. The narrative does not excuse abuse because a leader is important. Watch for the experience of people harmed by royal choices as well as David's response.
