Listen to the voices
Identify who is speaking and who is being addressed. A narrator, a character, a poet, and a letter writer do not all function in the same way. Before accepting a statement as the passage’s teaching, consider how the surrounding text presents its speaker.
Learning the language of prayer
The Psalms give voice to praise, grief, confession, anger, trust, and longing. Poetry uses images and parallel lines to express lived prayer. A psalm's emotion is not a demand that every reader feel the same way immediately.
With Psalms 27–30 in view: What movement of prayer or repeated image helps you understand this psalm?
Reflect on today’s passage
Whose words need to be weighed against the surrounding passage?
