Distinguish description and direction
A passage may describe an action, express a feeling, make a promise, or give an instruction. These require different responses. An account of someone’s behavior does not automatically commend it, and a promise to a particular audience should not be detached from that setting.
Wisdom in ordinary choices
Proverbs gathers instruction and compact sayings about wise living. Many sayings describe usual patterns rather than unconditional guarantees. Compare nearby sayings and consider the situation before using one line as an answer to someone else's difficulty.
With Proverbs 24–26 in view: What habit does this saying encourage, and what situation would require care in applying it?
