Listen to the voices
Identify who is speaking and who is being addressed. A narrator, a character, a poet, and a letter writer do not all function in the same way. Before accepting a statement as the passage’s teaching, consider how the surrounding text presents its speaker.
Contending with mercy
Jude warns against destructive conduct and teaching using scriptural and traditional examples. The closing instructions include prayer, perseverance, and mercy toward those who doubt. Discernment should not erase compassion.
