Mercy at the Roadside

Luke 10:25–372 minute reading
Luke 10:25–37

A lawyer asks Jesus about eternal life and the identity of his neighbor. Jesus answers with a Samaritan who cares for an injured stranger.

Open passage and surrounding context
CONSIDER THE PASSAGE

The lawyer wants a boundary around the word neighbor. Jesus tells a story that moves attention from defining the deserving person to becoming a person who shows mercy. The Samaritan sees the wounded man, approaches him, and takes responsibility for concrete care. His compassion involves time, supplies, transport, and money. It is more than a sympathetic opinion about someone else's suffering.

Read the whole exchange before deciding what today's response should be. Jesus does not supply a modern policy for every difficult encounter. Wise care can include asking trained people for help or protecting your own safety. But the story challenges the habit of treating another person's need as someone else's business. Consider one need close enough for you to respond to responsibly. You do not have to solve everything to offer something real.

A question to carry with you
