Receiving a Kingdom

Mark 10:13–162 minute reading
Mark 10:13–16

When the disciples turn away children brought to Jesus, he welcomes them and describes receiving God's kingdom like a child.

Open passage and surrounding context
CONSIDER THE PASSAGE

The disciples act as gatekeepers, deciding who deserves Jesus' attention. Jesus responds by welcoming the children and correcting the restriction. The scene invites us to consider receiving rather than qualifying ourselves through importance. Those without the status the disciples seem to value are not an interruption to his ministry.

The passage does not define every child as innocent or ask adults to abandon thoughtful understanding. Its emphasis is the kingdom's reception and Jesus' welcome. Notice where you approach God as though you must first become impressive. You can bring your actual dependence into prayer. Also consider who is treated as inconvenient in your community. Making room for a person with little status can be a practical response to a scene in which Jesus refuses exclusion.
